this is the official elementary os way, how to install the NVIDIA or AMD graphic driver. it's pretty easy, first open "Additional Drivers" in elementary os (you won't find this in system settings, don't ask my why..) and choose any prefered driver displayed. Example: and reboot. that's it. have fun Edit by elysium: @ElementaryOS 0.4 Loki the GUI is not pre-installed anymore. You need to install the Additional Drivers GUI first: sudo apt install software-properties-gtk software-properties-common
I have had installed the driver manually (Nvidia*.run) before taking this screenshot. thats why it is greyed out. for everybody else than me it is able to install
I do this and then select Use this display for my external monitor in Displays settings. I drag the button but it jumps back automatically. This happens no matter which drivers I select. I have 3 options. Nvidia 340 Nvidia 340 updates X Org What do I do?
I would say 340-updates. But all of them (340/340-updates) are out of date. with this PPA here, you will get the new nvidia: ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
Ok, thanks. Installed the recommended nvidia-352. The 352 option was not added to "additional drivers" though, but maybe that is supposed to be so? Don't know if I am running 352 or not... Now the options are: Nvidia 340.96 Nvidia 340.96 updates X Org Chose 340.96 updates as suggested. Hope it works. I had noticed a difference between X Org and the old prop drivers when running a Steam game (better performance on prop.). Do the X Org drivers get updated via the software updater? Thanks. Edit: Hmm seems something is wrong. Steam does not launch. Nothing happens when clicking the steam icon... Trying via command line: user@machine:~$ steam Running Steam on elementary os 0.3.2 64-bit STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1451690000) libGL error: No matching fbConfigs or visuals found libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast [My highlights] I have no idea what this means or what I am to do.
My System is an old AMD Athlon XP 1900+ on a ASUS A7V600-X MoBo with NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti200 elementaryos-0.3.2-stable-i386.20151209 is installed and up. Starting with "nouveau-driver" give bad luck with black screen. From nvidia-home i got NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.19-pkg1.run & NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.23-pkg1.run Both packages won't install. Have you installed all of the following packages: linux-image-generic-lts-vivid install linux-generic-lts-vivid install (not only linux-generic) linux-headers-3.19.0-59 install linux-headers-3.19.0-59-generic install
Hi boys I Cant install elementary Os becuse After Installation elementary Os Or Ubuntu Os My Screen Jump And After 5-40 Min SYSTEM Hanged! And I Just Must Hard Reboot SYSTEM ! This Hang Meybe In InsTall Time Or After Installing! Who Can Fix That! Sorry Boys My ENG No Good
It is so incomprehensible, that the developers removed this GUI.... I really do not understand this too. You can download the Application Software & Updates again with this line in your terminal: Code (Text): sudo apt-get install software-properties-gtk software-properties-common Now go to "Applications" > type in "Software & Updates" > open the GUI and install the driver
Hi, after installing a fresh Loki to my hdd i installed sudo apt-get install software-properties-gtk software-properties-common[ and my nvidia-340 drivers.. but after a restart my plymouth screen is broken! not showing up or wrong resolution!! this is the same ***t on Freya.. what can i do to get my elementary plymoouth screen back like fresh loki?! Do you have any idea? thx Problem solved with Link
Hi Boys I Cant Install Additional Drivers by code!!!!! I Install OS Whit Windows 10 Who Can Fix it !!!!!!!
I am not sure what is wrong, but as i know, you can download the proprietary driver from amd.com > Driver > Choose your Graphic Card > Choose latest Ubuntu Version > Download > Install. Amd drivers are much easier to install this way than nvidia. Another question is, do you really need the proprietary drivers? AMD is going more and more open source, their default Kernel driver is often already good enough. i am not sure how good it is for your specific (old) graphoc card, sorry.
I installed this for a nvidia gt520m but when I restart, black screen appear, this is a fresh elementary os loki; yesterday I installed manually the driver via terminal, but the black screen appear too; what I need to do? I can do CTRL + ALT + F1 but lightdm have some problem, so that restarted every 5 seconds, so I need to stop this via terminal with sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm stop; what is the problem? If I dont install the nvidia drivers, I can manage all in the graphical system, but when I reboot with the nvidia drivers, black screen!
